The Yukon Campaign

The discovery of gold in the Yukon resulted in a contingent of volunteers from the permanent force contingent being sent, in 1898, to northern Canada to assert territorial jurisdiction from American expansionists. The force was withdrawn after a year and replaced with a Non-Permanent Militia Unit raised in Dawson City.

The Congo and Cyprus Emergencies

The early sixties would see Canadians deployed in smaller numbers, and in new roles, on United Nations missions. Canadians were deployed as communications specialists in the Congo, because they spoke both English and French. Troops were also sent as peacekeepers to Cyprus, and remained in that role for almost 30 years.
