From the late 18th century, this unit of volunteer militiamen assisted the regular gunners of the British Royal Artillery serve the guns installed in the many forts and batteries guarding Halifax and its important Royal Navy base. Its uniform was usually similar to that of the Royal Artillery. From 1864 to about 1870 however, it had a distinct Nova Scotia militia artillery uniform as shown in the illustration.
