Recruiting party of the Provincial Corps of Light Infantry (Canadian Voltigeurs), 1812-1813

Type: Image

In French Canada, recruiting parties would make their announcements seeking recruits after Sunday mass. An officer (in green), soldier, bugler and sergeant (in grey) of the Provincial Corps of Light Infantry (popularly known as the 'Canadian Voltigeurs') are shown on the steps of a Lower Canadian church sometime during 1812-1813. Further recruiting business would be conducted in local taverns. It was in the interest of company officers to get recruits - their commissions were often not confirmed until after they enlisted a specific number of men. Reconstruction by Eugène Lelièpvre.
