La France est le premier État européen présent dans le golfe du Saint-Laurent dès le XVIe siècle, après la découverte des riches bancs de poissons de Terre-Neuve. Elle s’y établit en permanence à partir de 1604 et fonde un pays où se développe une culture propre. L'artillerie des premiers forts défendant les villes de la Nouvelle-France est généralement montée sur ce type d'affût. On voit ici un canonnier nettoyer la lumière à l'aide d'une pointe effilée. Un des artilleurs porte une pique fourchue qui sert à tenir une mèche lente qui allume la poudre contenue dans la lumière qui, à son tour, fait exploser la charge de poudre propulsant le boulet.

Artillery installed in the early forts defending the towns of New France was usually mounted on this type of carriage. A gunner is shown clearing the vent with a thin spike. The forked pike carried by one of the gunners was used to hold a slow match to ignite the powder in the gun's vent. This caused the ignition of the powder charge in the barrel and the firing of the cannonball.
