Rice's musical career began as part of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Comedy Company on the battlefields of World War 1. His became the musical voice of our soldiers overseas with such popular recordings as "Dear Old Pal of Mine." Rice was on active duty in Ypres, Belgium when he composed the theme of this song. Includes samples of his songs.

In 1915, Claudius Corneloup enlisted as a volunteer with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He joined the ranks of the 22nd Battalion, the only Francophone infantry unit, where he experienced the horror of combat. Unlike many of his fellow soldiers, Corneloup left a written record of his memoirs.
