The de Havilland Vampire became the first jet fighter to serve in the Canadian Air Force after 86 of them were received in 1946. Designed in Britain during the Second World War, the Vampire could reach speeds of 548 mph (876 kph). It was retired in 1958. (DND, PC-251)
