Caption: Major-General Jacob Brown, US Army, circa 1814
Jacob Jennings Brown (1775-1828) was one of the best American generals that emerged in the later part of the War of 1812. He began the war as a New York state militia officer, and was commissioned in the regular army in 1813. Promoted major general, he commanded the well-trained 'Left Division' in 1814 which invaded Upper Canada across the Niagara frontier. The portrait upon which this print was based was one of a series commissioned in 1814 of American heroes.
