Caption: Captain Jacques Viger, Provincial Corps of Light Infantry (Canadian Voltigeurs), circa 1812-1815

Captain Jacques Viger (1787 - 1858) is shown wearing the distinctive peaked fur cap worn by the Canadian Voltigeurs in this contemporary drawing. The Voltigeurs' officers wore laced jackets, following the fashion of officers of light cavalry and rifle regiments in the British army. Captain Viger later became the City of Montreal’s first mayor in 1834, and was well known as a scholar and antiquarian during his lifetime. (Parks Canada)
