Caption: Soldier of the Compagnies franches de la Marine of Canada, 1757-1760

In 1757, five hundred men of the Compagnies franches de la Marine of Canada were gathered into a battalion, informally known as the 'régiment de la Marine.' The unit was intended to fight in the European manner alongside the battalions of the troupes de la Terre (the French metropolitan army) sent to reinforce the garrison of New France. This soldier, wearing his full uniform during the final campaigns in New France, could be a part of this unit. Reconstruction by Eugène Lelièpvre. (Parks Canada)
