Caption: Officer and gunner, Royal Artillery, 1742-1750
These British soldiers of 1742-1750 wear the blue uniforms of the Royal Regiment of Artillery. The dark colour helped hide the dirt and filth that soon covered anyone firing cannon or other pieces of artillery. The officer on the left is distinguished by his scarlet sash, the symbol of British officers since the late 17th century. Print after R.J. Macdonald.
