A view of a Viking settlement in America

Caption: A view of a Viking settlement in America

This view was conceived during the 1930s by historical artist Fergus Kyle. Although horns are now known not to have been used on Viking helmets, as shown here and on countless other depictions in popular art, most other aspects shown give a relatively realistic impression of what such a place might look like. The Vikings also could build timber houses as well as those made of earth.
